Suffix Clowns

Write -ant, -able, and -ance on the board. Have students draw a clown form like the one at the left. Tell students to label the clown with the word rely. Remind them that the spelling of some base words that end in y changes when a suffix is added. Then have them add each suffix to rely and write the new words on the balloons. Allow students to use a class dictionary. Next, ask students to look up each word's meaning and to use one new word in a sentence.
