Schoolhouse Rhymes
(visual/oral/kinesthetic)
Have children draw a school with several windows. Ask them to cut along the center, top, and bottom of each window, making shutters that can be opened and closed. Children glue their drawing to another piece of paper. They write the letters ake on the roof of the school.
Next, children brainstorm a list of words that rhyme with make. Have them write one -ake word behind each set of window shutters. Have them print the consonant or consonant cluster that begins the word on the shutters. Children can trade schools and see if they can guess what -ake word is behind the shutters.
