Cut and Count

Math/Social Studies

Children will cut out and paste pictures of items from newspapers, magazines, advertising inserts, or catalogs, and write how many items there are.

What You Need

  • Newspapers, magazines, or catalogs
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Construction paper
  • Markers or crayons

What To Do

  1. Page through newspapers, magazines, or catalogs with children. Point out multiple items in advertisements, photographs, and illustrations.
  2. Ask children to cut out pictures that show different numbers of items, such as five bananas, eight windows, or two dolls.
  3. Have children paste their cut-outs on construction paper and write the number of items on the sheet.
  4. Post the pages in a display or bind them together in one or more counting books.
