Friendship Poem

Social Studies/Poetry

Children will write a group poem about friendship

What You Need

  • Creative ideas
  • Chart paper

What To Do

  1. Explain to children that they will be helping to create a class poem about friends. Each line of the poem will begin, "A friend… ".
  2. Invite children to complete that line by telling what a friend does, what a friend is, or how a friend feels.
  3. Have children think of details from their experience. Give a few examples: a friend saves your seat; a friend sends you a get-well card; a friend trades his cream-cheese and jam sandwich for your hard-boiled egg.
  4. Alternate use of his and her.
  5. Write down each suggested line on chart paper. Use the total response as the poem or edit it to balance examples and representation.
  6. Display the finished poem in the classroom.
