At this "one-stop portal for information and resources on service and volunteering," you'll find service opportunities, news, event listings, and plenty of incentives for you and your students to get involved. There are weekly polls and volunteering-related quotes, too. One week's example: "A civilization flourishes when people plant trees under whose shade they will never sit."

Guide Dogs for the Blind
Here your class can learn more about the amazing dogs featured in Mom's Best Friend. Guide Dogs for the Blind is a nonprofit organization that provides dogs and training to the visually impaired; the organization's Web site offers news, features, and resources including facts about blindness and disability and stories about visually impaired people coping with everyday challenges (ever imagine what it's like for a blind parent to change diapers and bathe a newborn baby?). The site also features an educational resource guide and classroom activity planner.

The Ehru
And now for something completely different! This site examines the history, anatomy, range, and just about everything else you could want to know about the ehru, the ancient Chinese musical instrument featured in Yang the Second and Her Secret Admirers—and one of the Chinese traditions that Yang holds so dear.
