Grade 5 Houghton Mifflin Reading

Set in Our Ways

Listening/Speaking

Students will investigate their family's heritage and traditions.

What You Need

  • Notebook or tape recorder to record interviews with family members

What To Do

  1. Ask students to interview family members about traditions that have been passed down from previous generations. How were those traditions established? How does the family observe them now?
  2. Tell students to make notes about their own attitudes toward traditions as well. How do students' attitudes compare with those of their parents or siblings? Do they plan to carry on their family traditions when they are older?
  3. Ask students to share their family traditions with the class.
