Grade 5 Houghton Mifflin Reading

Animals on Call

Science

Students will study how animals improve the lives of people in need.

What You Need

  • Access to the Internet or library books about therapy animals (also known as companion animals)

What To Do

  1. Help students find online information about therapy or companion animals at a Web site such as the Delta Society (http://petsforum.com/deltasociety/default.html) or have them do library research on the subject.
  2. Organize students into small groups. Ask each group to explore a different aspect of animal-assisted therapy. For example, they might study which kinds of animals are best suited to companion work, what health benefits companion animals provide, or how animals are trained to work with the disabled. Ask students to share their findings with the class.
