Grade 4 Houghton Mifflin Reading

Travel Log

Listening/Speaking

Students will gather memories and mementos of past journeys and create a trip journal.

What You Need

  • Photos, souvenirs, and other mementos from trips to places near or far, if available. Alternatively, art supplies so students can draw pictures of a place they have visited
  • A tape recorder or notebook to record interviews with family members

What To Do

  1. Have students gather photos and souvenirs from a place they visited. It can be someplace far or someplace as close as their local beach. If students cannot obtain photos or souvenirs, ask them to draw a picture of a place they visited.
  2. Ask students to use their photos, souvenirs, or memories to help make notes about their trip. Also ask them to interview family members or friends who went on the trip, recording or writing down their memories.
  3. Have students write an essay describing where they went, what they saw and did, and how they felt about it, incorporating their interviewees' memories as well. Ask them to present their essay, along with their photos and souvenirs or drawings, to the class.
