Plan a Family Reunion

Social Studies

Each child will plan a family reunion, including a list of those to be invited, a location, a menu, a schedule of events, and a list of tasks to be done.

What You Need

  • Writing paper
  • Pencils

What To Do

  1. Explain to the children that you would like each of them to plan a family reunion. Point out that a family reunion is a party attended by as many members of a family as possible. Then write these questions on the board:
    Who should be invited?
Where will the reunion be held? What decorations will be needed?
What food and drinks will be served?
    What events will take place?
What tasks need to be done to get ready? Who should do those tasks?
  2. Have the children begin by listing the names of as many relatives as they can think of. Encourage children to ask immediate family members for help drawing up this list.
  3. Then ask the children to choose and make a note of a good site for the reunion—perhaps someone's home, a park, or a rented hall. Also have children make a note of any decorations that will be needed.
  4. Next, tell children to list the food and drinks to be served at the reunion.
  5. Have the children plan a schedule of events for the reunion. These might include speeches, slide or video shows, skits put on by family members, games that children and/or adults can play, an exchange of silly gifts, or trips to local places of interest.
  6. Finally, ask the children to decide what tasks need to be done before the reunion, and to assign tasks to different family members.
  7. Suggest that the children share their reunion plans with their families at home. If you wish, you can ask children to present parts of their plans to the class.
