These Web sites offer resources and activities that tie to the theme Special Friends.
The Gorilla FoundationKoko the Gorilla
This site stars the famous gorilla Koko, who can speak in American Sign Language and who befriends cats. The site has a children's area, Koko's Kids Club, with pictures and information about Koko, other gorillas at the Gorilla Foundation, and gorillas in the wild. There is also a link to a transcript of an online chat that Koko and her trainer, Penny (Dr. Francine Patterson) had with kids from around the country.

Man's Best Friend!
Think special friends, and dogs naturally come to mind. What do children need to know about caring for dogs? Which breeds are the most popular with students? Children can find answers to these questions, do a dog word search, and play a fun learn-as-you-go scavenger hunt at this canine Web site, designed and maintained by students.

Making Friends Projects
Choose among fourteen crafts projects, most using printable cutouts of friendly characters that can be added to a Go Fish game, a card, a travel magnet, or other formats. In some cases, children may substitute photographs of themselves and their classmates to create a customized friendship project.
