Grade 1 Houghton Mifflin Reading

How Many Hens?

Math/Language Arts

Children will learn a counting game.

What You Need

  • Space to move around in
  • Number cards (optional)
  • Tape or CD player and marching music (optional)

What To Do

  1. Tell children that they are going to learn a counting game.
  2. Choose one child to be Jen Hen. Jen starts marching to the chosen destination. One by one, the other children join in and march in a line behind Jen. As children march, they say this chant:
Jen and friends went for a walk
Down by the deep blue sea.
Jen and friends started to squawk.
    How many hens are we?
    [children count off]
We're [number of children] little hens, are we.
That's right! [Number of children] little hens are we.
