Theme 2: Give It All You've Got

Investigate these sites with your students to learn about others who have truly “given it all they've got.”

Academy of Achievement
Billing itself as an “interactive museum of living history,” this site offers profiles of achievers in a wide range of fields: the arts, public service, sports, business, and science and exploration. You can also browse through the “essential elements of achievement” —passion, vision, preparation, courage, perseverance, and integrity—and find out how achievers applied these principles to reach their goals.

The Kids Hall of Fame
The Kids Hall of Fame pays tribute to Super Kids—children and teens who are “positive peer role models” and have accomplished something “above and beyond what is typically expected of someone at that age.” You are invited to send in your own nominees; the winners, including young athletes, scholars, and community organizers, are profiled on the site.

Women's International Center
After reading about Mae Jemison and Michelle Kwan, turn to this site to learn about more than 100 other female achievers, from anthropologist Margaret Mead, to astronaut Sally Ride, to political leader Golda Meir, to opera singer Beverly Sills. All have received the WIC's Living Legacy Awards, established to “celebrate women and their positive, enduring contributions to humanity.” You'll find winners' biographies and photos, words of wisdom from award recipients, and links to other women's resources. Students can also find out which achievers share their birthdate!
