Field Trip Ideas

Color Hunt

  • Children will hunt for colors around the outside play area or neighborhood. Before the hunt begins, have children name colors as you prepare a chart that shows splotches of those colors. Tell children they will find these colors outside.
  • If possible, divide the class into two or more smaller groups with other adults. Each group should have a chart.
  • Bring children to a location where they can sit and look around. Have them find various color items. Draw each item next to the appropriate color and write the word. The hunt is over when there is at least one item next to each color.
  • When you return from the hunt, review the charts with children. Have each child choose an item to draw. Assemble the drawings in a classroom book.

Paint Store

  • Visit a paint or hardware store to introduce children to the many shades of color. Before you go, ask children if they have visited such a store. Discuss items they will see and reasons people go there. Arrange your visit in advance and bring a camera, if possible.
  • Once you arrive, show the children the paint color samples. Allow each child to choose several sample strips.
  • If possible, purchase a small can of latex paint. Choose a color on a paint strip. Have the store owner/clerk demonstrate how colors are added to a can of white paint and how the paint is mixed. Compare the finished product with the paint strip.
  • In your classroom, have children use the color strips to arrange color groups, or use the strips in matching games. Some strips can be used in the art center or to show a color wheel. Allow children to use the can of paint, if possible. Send a group thank-you note to the store.
