Field Trip Ideas

Kindergarten Classroom

  • Visit a kindergarten classroom with children who will be attending kindergarten in the fall. Before you go, have children discuss what they might see on their visit. Once there, encourage children to walk around the classroom, noting items that are the same and different from their current classroom. Take photos, if possible.
  • Invite a kindergarten teacher or students to talk to children during your visit.
  • When you return from the school, have children draw pictures of what they will do in kindergarten.
  • If you are unable to visit a classroom, invite kindergarten-age or older children to come talk about their experiences in kindergarten.
  • Plan a different activity for children who are not attending kindergarten in the fall.

School Bus

  • Arrange to have a school bus come to your school, especially if children have not been on a school bus before.
  • Have children climb on and off the bus several times, choosing different seats each time. Take photos, if possible.
  • Ask the bus driver to talk about bus safety. The driver can start the engine, beep the horn, and have the children listen to the beep when the bus is in reverse. Permission would likely be required if the bus were to actually drive.
  • Encourage children to draw or reenact their experience on the bus.
