As your child helps you cook or simply plays in the sandbox, he or she will be learning about measuring. Combining and separating objects and materials and comparing weight and amounts are some other skills your child will be learning, too. All of these skills will help your child in the area of math.
You may be able to provide different materials to play with, such as sand, packing peanuts, shallow water in a sink, or small rocks. Add some measuring cups, spoons, and simple, recycled plastic containers to give your child the chance to experiment. Ask questions occasionally so your child can describe what he or she is discovering, using words such as lighter, heavier, more, less, whole, and part.
