How Likely Is It?

Probability means how likely it is that something will happen. This activity will reinforce your child's understanding of the language of probability as it brings laughter to the entire family.

What You Need:

  • Index cards
  • Marker
  • Paper bag

What You and Your Child Will Do:

  1. Write these words with a marker, one to an index card.
5 word cards: certain, likely, equally likely, unlikely, impossible
  2. Fold all the cards in half and drop them into the paper bag.
  3. Without looking into the bag, one player picks a card, peeks at the word, and then makes up a family-related sentence in which the word belongs.
    For example,
    • Someone who picks “unlikely” may give this sentence: “It is blank that we will have meatballs and spaghetti for dinner.”
    • Someone who picks “equally likely” may say this: “It is blank that I will play basketball or hockey this weekend.”
    • Someone who picks “impossible” may say: “It is blank that a toad will hop out of my knapsack.”
  4. The other players have to guess which of the five words belong in the sentence. The first player to guess correctly picks the next card from the bag and makes up a sentence for it.
