Shopping Counts

The next time you stop at the supermarket, bring your child along to practice addition and subtraction!

What You Need:

  • Trip to a supermarket

What You and Your Child Will Do:

As you walk up and down the supermarket aisles, be on the lookout for products of a single kind. (Try to find up to 10 of the same product on a shelf.) Point out the product and ask your child questions like these:

  1. How many of (the product) are there? (Have the child either count alone by pointing to each item or count the items together.)
  2. Suppose we could buy (2) of these. Then how many would be left? (Put the items into your cart and let the child count to find the number left on the shelf.)
  3. (Now have the child take the items from the cart and put them back on the shelf.) How many are on the shelf now?
