Using the Five Senses
In your child's science class, we've been studying the five senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste). You can help your child understand how we can use our senses to sort fruits and vegetables.
What You Need
- a variety of fruits and vegetables that can be sorted with the five senses (such as, an orange, an apple, a banana, a tomato, a lemon)
What You Do
Place several fruits and vegetables in front of your child. Encourage your child to use his or her senses (as appropriate) to sort the fruits and vegetables into groups. When your child has grouped all the fruits and vegetables, ask what rule was used for sorting. Check the groups. Continue the activity with a new rule.
What Happened?
Talk with your child about how he or she used his or her nose, hands, ears, mouth, and eyes to sort the fruits and vegetables into groups. Help your child understand that by using all of our senses, we can find out about the world around us.
