Habitat Hunt

In science class, you learned that an organism's habitat is the place where it lives. Different kinds of animals, plants, and other living things live in different kinds of habitats. In Georgia, there are many habitats, including the piedmont, mountain, swamp, marsh, coastal, and ocean habitats. Some of these habitats may be near your home. You and your family members can learn more about them by going on a Habitat Hunt.

Procedure

Use a ruler and a marker to draw one line down the center of a piece of paper. Then draw two lines across the paper. This will separate your paper into six sections. In each of the sections, draw a picture of one of Georgia's habitats. Make sure to include the piedmont, mountain, marsh, swamp, coastal, and ocean habitats. With an adult's help, find out which of these habitats are in your area. Then go on a Habitat Hunt. With an adult, visit as many as you can. Each time you visit a habitat, punch a hole in that section of your paper. If some of the habitats are too far away, you can look for examples in magazines, newspapers, and on television.
