Singing Strings

You have learned in science class about sound and vibrations. In this activity, you and your family members can see vibrations and hear the sounds they produce.

Ask an adult to help you put the string though the holes in the button. Tie the ends of the string together in a knot so that you have a loop about 6 inches long on each side of the button. Holding onto the loops, twirl the button so that the string becomes twisted. As you pull on the ends of the loops, the button will spin, untwisting and then re-twisting the string. Describe the sound that is made.

What was the pitch and volume of the sound? Does the sound depend on the size of the button or the type of string you used? What do you think would happen if you used different buttons or string?
