Why do people wear eyeglasses? Eyeglasses have lenses that are curved on one or both sides. The shape of the lenses makes objects look larger or smaller. In science class, you have been exploring how light waves bend or refract. Do this activity to see what happens when a lens refracts light.
- sheet of newspaper
- index card
- clear tape
- eyedropper or straw
Look at some letters in the newspaper. Notice their size. Ask an adult family member to help you make a small hole in the center of the index card. The hole should be 2.5 centimeters (about 1 inch) in diameter. Cover it with tape. Put the card on top of the letters you looked at before in the newspaper. Use the eyedropper or straw to put a drop of water on the tape over the hole. Look at the letters through the hole.
What acted as a lens in the activity? How did the lens affect the size of the letters in the newspaper?
