Have you ever watched a flag go up a pole? A pulley helps it get to the top. A pulley is a machine. You have been learning how machines help things move. You can make a pulley to see for yourself how it works.
- thread spool
- pencil or thin dowel
- string, 2 meters long
Push the dowel through the spool. Then ask an adult to hold up the ends of the dowel. Tie one end of the string to the block. Wind the string over the spool. Move the block by using your pulley. Pull on the free end of the string. Notice what direction the block moves.
What work did the pulley do? What kind of force did you use?
How did you use the pulley to change the direction of the force?
