## Teacher Guide: Unit 2

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional practice with the skills taught in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

In the Unit 2: Science Connection activity, children need to choose the correct group for each of the 6 animals by clicking the mouse over the correct group. They need to be able to distinguish between objects that are living and objects that are nonliving. You may help the children to categorize by asking them questions about the objects in the 2 groups, such as:

• How are the things in this group the same?
• Can the objects in this group jump up and down?
• Do the objects in this group grow?
• How are the 2 groups different?

Point to the two groups of objects and ask children to count the number of objects in each group. Ask children whether the first group has more, has fewer, or has the same as the second group. (Same) Ask children how they can tell if two groups have the same number of objects.
