Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Unit 5

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their textbooks.

The article “Bridge to Sicily” is about the Italian government's plan to build a bridge from the Italian mainland to the island of Sicily.

Have students read the article on their own and then complete the Word Wise activity. The activity has students look at each of the four Word Wise terms in a dictionary to find their word roots, if they have any. Then students are asked to write down any words they can think of that share a word root, prefix, or suffix with that word.

The Data Hunt activity has students draw and label a design for a bridge to Sicily. Bridges should have the following features:

  • The design should include a repeated pattern of shapes.
  • The design can be of a small segment of the bridge.
  • The dimensions of the segment should be labeled.
  • Students should describe their bridges: the materials used, the number of segments needed, etc.
