Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Unit 4

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their textbooks.

The article “Chess Anyone?” describes an archaeological dig that discovered the world's oldest chess pieces. The article then goes on to discuss the history of the game.

Have students read the article on their own and then complete the Word Wise activity. The activity has multiple-choice questions that ask the students to choose the best word to complete a sentence.

The Data Hunt activity has students use answers from the article, as well as information that they find in an encyclopedia, to create a timeline of chess-related events. Students will label dates with either c.e. (Common Era), or b.c.e. (Before Common Era). Remind students that years labeled b.c.e. work in the same way as negative numbers, in that higher numbers are actually earlier dates (and further to the left of the timeline).
