Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 10.8

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

Students read the article “Money-Making Marvel“ about Cameron Johnson who, from the age of nine, used unusually sophisticated business acumen to start up a series of successful businesses. When Cameron was 15, he said in an interview that his dream was to “sit in an office building all day and work.”

The Word Wise activity instructs students to create a word web in which they list terms related to one of the Word Wise words. You may want to provide a thesaurus to help students complete their word webs.

Students are encouraged to develop original ideas for their own small businesses through the Data Hunt activity. They work together to develop a list of ideas. They then poll others to collect data about the ideas. Finally, they display the results of the poll in a chart or graph of their choosing.

You might want to discuss students' survey results and their choice of data display. Ask students whether they might be able to use a different data display to show their survey results, and how that choice might affect the appearance of the results.
