Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Unit 8

The Weekly Reader Connections feature of Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Germ of an Idea: Designer Bacteria” describes the work of a UMass Dartmouth professor, who has been working to create a type of fabric that would never have to be washed.

Have students read the article on their own and then complete the Word Wise activity. The activity asks students to draw a picture and write the definition of the words fabric, fiber, and garment, then draw arrows between the definitions to show how they are related.

The Data Hunt activity has students create a newspaper advertisement for a clothing store that sells the self-cleaning clothing discussed in the article. The advertisement should include:

  • pictures of items to be sold
  • the price of each item
  • the cost of an entire outfit, written out as an equation
  • information about how the clothing self-cleans
