Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 23.5

The Weekly Reader Connections feature of Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

In the article “Sunken Treasure” students read about the recent recovery of the cargo of the S.S. Republic, which sank off the coast of Georgia in 1865. The ship had been carrying supplies intended to help the post-Civil War reconstruction efforts in the South.

The booty recovered from this shipwreck includes an astounding collection of gold and silver coins, almost all of which are in remarkable condition. Some of these coins have now become available for purchase from coin dealers.

The Word Wise activity focuses on words that begin with the letters wr. As students look back over the article they will find the following wr words to use in their sentences.

  • wreck
  • writing
  • wrestling
  • wrath
  • wrapped

The Data Hunt activity has students make an organized list of coin combinations that add up to 25¢. Have students work in groups or pairs to list as many combinations as they can, using coins or coin models to help them.

Students should produce a list similar to the one shown below. After students feel that they have finished their lists sufficiently, go over the 12 ways that they can combine the coins to make 25¢.
