Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 20.8

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Secrets of the Great Pyramid” tells of scientists' search for the pharaoh Khufu's burial chamber. Students read that a robot was used to get to a door that people could not get to. If time allows, you may wish to have students locate Egypt on a map of the continent of Africa. Explain that the region named Giza in ancient times is now part of suburban Cairo, the capital city of Egypt.

The Word Wise activity encourages students to think creatively as they develop ideas for a personal robot. Remind students to think of things for their robots to do that they cannot do themselves. (This should keep them from merely saying that they would have their robots do their homework!)

When students first encounter the circle graph in the Data Hunt activity, they may be stumped by the question mark in the sector marked “New Boat.” Discuss students' ideas about how to go about finding the fractional part for that sector.

  1. How many of the 24 players won a new car?
    Answer: 12
  2. What fraction of the 24 players did not win a vacation? How many players was that?
    Answer: 5/6 ; 20
  3. What fraction of the players won a gag prize? Write your answer in simplified form.
    Answer: 1/4

If this activity presents too great a difficulty for some children, have them try it for a total of 12 prizes, instead of 24.
