Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 16.7

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Ancient Art Saved” discusses the potential loss of art treasures owing to the flooding of a Turkish city. Have students read the article. Alert them to the meaning of the reference “about 1 foot a day.” Point out that the ceiling of your classroom is about 9 (or 10) feet high. Ask students how long it would take an empty room of that height to fill with water if the water flowed in at 1 foot a day!

The Word Wise activity reminds students that a single sound can be spelled in different ways. Students will have no trouble naming at least two words, like “show,” that have the sh sound at the beginning. They may have more trouble suggesting words, like “official,” that have the sh sound elsewhere in the word. Other examples are the words direction, flash, special, ocean, and machine.

The Data Hunt activity familiarizes students with the art of the Turkish rug. Print at least one copy of the Turkish Rug Worksheet (PDF file) for each student to color. (You may want to have some extra copies in case of mistakes!) Before students begin coloring their rugs, remind them to first plan which colors they will use. Point out that just as the shapes in a pattern repeat, the colors should repeat as well.
