Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Unit 6

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Sashiko: Japanese Quilting” talks about the 3,000-year-old tradition of embroidery known as Sashiko. Sashiko patterns are generally repeating patterns or tessellations. The article includes three images of Sashiko patterns.

Have students read the article on their own and then complete the Word Wise activity. The activity requires students to choose the best words to complete three sentences.

The Data Hunt activity asks students to design their own Sashiko patterns, based on something they are familiar with, such as a brick wall. You may give students the Grid Paper Worksheet (PDF file) to help them to design a repeating pattern. Have students name their Sashiko patterns.
