Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Unit 5

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their textbooks.

The article “Daylight Saving Time” talks about the history of Daylight Saving Time and shares some facts about the subject. Have students read the article on their own and then complete the Word Wise activity. The activity instructs students to write a sentence using each of the Word Wise terms, leaving a blank where the term would be. Then each student trades his or her sentences with a partner, and they complete each other's sentences.

The Data Hunt activity asks students to create a poster advertising Daylight Saving Time. The poster should include information on Daylight Saving Time, including drawings of clocks to show when it begins and ends. The purpose of the poster is to convince people that Daylight Saving Time is a good thing.
