Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 2.3

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Seeing With Bionic Eyes” alerts students to one of the latest medical developments in bionic technology. Have students read the article. You may wish to assure them that the six patients who were in the first group to receive the operation volunteered to have this experimental surgery. Each of the patients recognized some improvement in their sight as a result of the operation, although none had their sight completely restored.

Have students complete the Word Wise activity, which focuses on the word roots mech- and mach-. Be sure students understand that a word having either of these roots has something to do with machinery.

Possible Responses
Mech- Words mechanic
Mach- Words machine
machine shop

The Data Hunt activity introduces students to the different units used to indicate the amount of information stored in a computer chip. Students are then asked to find 5 different computers for sale in a newspaper or online. You may want to provide students with newspaper sales circulars. Students then list the amounts of memory in order from least to greatest. Check students' work.
