Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 20.9

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Booking U.N. Day” focuses on a book drive called the Book Aid Plan, organized by volunteers in Darien, Connecticut.

The Word Wise activity highlights the word ending -tion. Help students to see how some of the letters in the words “promote,” “observe,” and “donate” were replaced in order to write the words with the ending -tion.

  1. We are having a party to celebrate my little brother's      promotion      to first grade.
  2. Take the elevator up to the      observation      deck, where you can see the whole city.
  3. Please make a small      donation      to help poor children.

The Data Hunt activity has students write word problems using facts from “Booking U.N. Day.” Students may then exchange problems with their classmates. The following sample is given.

The Weekly Reader® Company donated 800 books to a literacy organization. If the literacy organization took those books and gave the same number of books to each of 5 different schools, how many books did each school receive? Explain your answer.

Answer: Each school received 160 books. I divided 800 by 5.
800 ÷ 5 = 160

Each student is required to provide the answer to his or her own problem. If you wish, you may check students' problems and present them to the class as a whole.
