Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 18.3

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Comfort Quilts” familiarizes students with the hobby of making patchwork quilts from quilt blocks, or fabric squares. Groups of quilters typically donate their works to charitable organizations to be used as comfort quilts by the sick or the elderly. You may be able to personalize the article by using your Web browser to locate quilting groups in your vicinity that have made such donations.

The Word Wise activity makes students aware of the double consonants that occur in some words. You may wish to extend the activity by focusing on the vocabulary word “transferred.” Ask students to identify the letters that must be added to transfer to create the past tense. Write “transferred” on the board, circling the double “r.” Then challenge students to write the past-tense forms of the following words: begin, rip, and trap.

In the Data Hunt activity, students are asked to design a 16-block quilt pattern and to then write fractions for each of the colors used in the design. Referring them to the Web sites mentioned above will be helpful in inspiring them to attempt their own designs.
