## Teacher Guide: Unit 7

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Rescuers Work to Save Beached Whales” describes a group of pilot whales that were beached off the coast of New Zealand in 2003.

Have students read the article on their own and then complete the Word Wise activity. The activity has students create a glossary for the article. Glossaries should include ten words, as well as illustrations for each definition. Students will need to use a dictionary to complete the activity.

The Data Hunt activity asks children to answer questions about the article in the form of fractions. The questions and answers are as follows.

According to the article, 120 whales died on the beach. Rescuers saved 39 whales.

• How many whales were stranded on the beach altogether? (159 whales)
• How many of the whales were saved? Write your answer as a fraction.
• How many of the whales were not saved? Write your answer as a fraction.
• Were more whales saved than not saved? Explain.
(More whales were not saved than saved; 39 whales were saved, and 120 whales were not saved. Therefore, more whales were not saved than saved.)
