In the article “Broad Stripes and Bright Stars” students read about the ongoing restoration of the Star-Spangled Banner.

In the Word Wise activity, students learn that antonyms are words that are opposite in meaning. Students are challenged to think of antonyms for the following words.

• dark
• open
• old
• fix
• new

In the article, the students learn that each star on the Star-Spangled Banner represents one of the states of the United States. The Data Hunt activity reinforces students' understanding of this by having them design a school flag on which each star represents one class in their school.

Help students read and execute the directions for designing their school flags. As you supervise their work, ask them to suggest multiplication and division sentences that are reflected by their star arrays.
