The article “World's Oldest Stadiums” tells about the recently revealed stadiums found during recent excavations in Dholavira in India. This city, close to the sea, was a major trading center with ancient Rome. Long covered as a result of innumerable earthquakes, the city was discovered in the late 1970s. However, excavations did not begin there until the 1990s.

A spokesman for the Archeological Survey of India has said about recent discovery, “It is believed that the bigger stadium was used for a variety of purposes, maybe for makeshift bazaars. This would be similar to exhibition grounds coming up these days.”

The Word Wise activity features the vocabulary word, earthquake, to introduce the meaning of compound words. Students choose one word from each of Columns A and B to write these compound words:

  • earthquake
  • schoolyard
  • catfish
  • windowpane
  • drumstick
  • peapod

The Data Hunt activity helps students create a mental image of a sports stadium. Students answer questions for which they need to first envision numerical arrays and then multiply and divide.

  1. 64 people
  2. 144 people
  3. 9 rows
  4. 11 rows
