Teacher Guide: Unit 3
The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.
The article “Are Manatees Out of Danger?“ describes the risks that manatees off the coast of Florida face, and how new laws in that state are protecting the manatees.
Have students read the article on their own and then complete the Word Wise activity. The activity is made up of two parts. The first part asks students to think about the root words in the words “endangered” and “enforce.” The second part asks students to draw a picture to show the meaning of the words increase, decrease, and decline. Ask children to look at the vocabulary words, and discuss what they think the prefix de- means.
The Data Hunt activity requires students to create a magazine ad to help save the Florida manatees, using information from the article. The article should include a line graph showing the current population of manatees, and the population in 45 years if the manatees are not protected. The line graph should show the population declining by 50%.
