Teacher Guide: Unit 1
The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.
The article “Digging Into History” describes the story of Ovid, the ancient poet, whose house was recently discovered in Rome.
Have students read the article on their own and then complete the Word Wise activity. The activity has multiple-choice questions about the vocabulary words in the article.
The Data Hunt activity has students write a letter from Ovid to a friend about his house. Students are required to use Roman numerals in their letter, and to draw a picture of the house to accompany the letter. Check students' letters. Have students read their letters aloud to be sure that they understand the meanings of the Roman numerals they have written.
