Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 15.8

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “The Euro” gives children information about the euro, the European currency that was released on January 1, 2002. The euro is used in the following 12 European Union countries, which you may want to show students on a map. You may also want to point out the continent of Europe on a world map or a globe. Help the children find their home state relative to Europe.

Spain
Luxembourg
Ireland
Greece
Portugal
Belgium
Germany
France
The Netherlands
Italy
Austria
Finland

The Word Wise activity has children design an advertisement for a travel company. The advertisement should be for a trip to two of the countries listed above and should include each of the Word Wise words in context. You will need to supply the children with paper and crayons or markers to complete this activity.

The Data Hunt activity has children research one of the countries that uses the euro and then imagine that they own a store in that country. Children must list five items, with a cost of five euros or less. Then the children write two different ways that a customer could pay for each item using euro coins.

You may want to supply the children with an encyclopedia or an almanac for their research, as well as paper and crayons for their work. The children may present their ideas to the class if time allows.
