Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 14.6

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Mexican Papier-Mâché” includes instructions for making a papier-mâché object. If time allows, children may follow the instructions to make a simple papier-mâché craft. They will need the following items:

  • newspaper
  • large bowl
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • balloon (any shape will work)
  • paintbrush
  • paint
  • pin

After the children read the article, have them do the Word Wise activity. This activity has children create a word web around the words warm and smooth. Ask the children to brainstorm things that they think of as being warm or smooth. You may want to point out to them that these words are describing words, or adjectives. You may provide a thesaurus to help the children find similar words.

In preparation for the Data Hunt activity, make sure that the children understand the values of different coins. You may want to supply the children with coins or manipulatives to help them complete the activity. The children should draw and label five papier-mâché items and assign a price in cents for each. They should then identify the coins they could use to pay for each item.
