Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 14.3

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Do Cents Make Sense?” tells about a congressman's interest in discontinuing the production and use of the penny. Read aloud the article or call on children to do so. Make sure the children understand that, according to Kolbe, no more pennies would be issued by the government, and all the pennies that people have could no longer be used.

The Word Wise activity uses the vocabulary word “discontinue” to introduce the concept of prefixes. Children are told that the prefix “dis-” means “not.” They write sentences to show their understanding of the meanings of other words that begin with “dis-”. You may want to show children how to use a dictionary to look up any word whose meaning they do not understand.

The Data Hunt activity has children choose the coins that add up to a given amount, without using pennies. You may want to review with children the value of nickels, dimes, quarters, and half-dollars.
