Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 7.7

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Circle of the Sun” talks about Hinomaru, the Japanese flag, and gives students some basic information about Japan.

After children read the article, have them do the Word Wise activity. You may want to supply children with almanacs, or help them to find an on-line almanac. The activity has children guess the population of their state. Children need to look up their state and find the population, and then compare it to their guess. As an extension, you may have children find the population of another state, of the U.S., or of another country.

For the Data Hunt activity, provide children with paper and colored markers. Children design a flag to represent something that is important to them, using colored markers and simple shapes. Then children list each of the elements in the flag (e.g. 50 white stars, 4 red triangles) and what each represents. Children may present their flags to the class.
