Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 2.7

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Lost City of Snakes“ tells about the Mayan archeological site, Cancuén. The region in which Cancuén is located represents one of the last rainforest stands in southern Guatemala. You may wish to tell children that scientists are hoping that people will come to visit the city. They want it to be a source of income for the Maya people who still live in the region. Scientists are also trying to preserve the endangered animal species in the surrounding rainforest — howler monkeys, wooly anteaters, and rare birds.

Call on children to read the article aloud. Then, provide them each with two sheets of grid paper (or two half sheets) on which to create their crossword puzzles for the Word Wise activity. Assist children who need help in copying and numbering their puzzle outlines.

The Data Hunt activity asks children to find out about three kinds of snakes. Guide children in their research. They may use encyclopedias or the Internet to find the data. Finally, children write a word problem about their snakes to give them practice in adding three addends whose sum is no more than 15.
