Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 21.3

The Weekly Reader Connections feature provides children with additional practice of the skills taught in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The Penguins activity has children choose the appropriate number sentence to represent a picture of penguins. Each of the pictures shows addition.

Explain that most penguins live in places that are much too cold for other animals. If you have a globe or a world map available, locate Antarctica. Tell children that it is so cold in Antarctica, most of the continent is solid ice.

You may wish to tell children that penguins can't fly. (They are much too heavy and their wings are much too small.) But when they swim, penguins move quickly through the water.
