Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Unit 7

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional practice of the skills taught in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The “Dolphins” activity includes a chart that shows the length, in inches, of three different types of dolphin calves. The dolphins listed are the bottle-nosed dolphin, the common dolphin, and the white-nosed dolphin.

If time allows, you may share some of the following information about dolphins with the children.

  • Bottle-nosed dolphin calves are usually born in the summer. These dolphins can live as long as 45 years.
  • Common dolphins are found in oceans throughout the world. They are one of the smallest dolphins. Common dolphins are very social—they are rarely seen alone.
  • The white-nosed dolphin is also known as the white-beaked dolphin, or squidhound. This dolphin is found generally in the Irish Sea.
