Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 12.5

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional practice with the skills taught in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The “How Many 5s?” activity provides extra practice with skip-counting by fives. Children are shown an illustration of trumpets on a set of shelves. There are five trumpets on each shelf. You may want to practice skip-counting by fives aloud with children.

Displaying a hundred chart for a quick review of skip-counting from five to 100 may be in order. Keep the chart on display for follow-up questions involving greater numbers of fives. Children can respond by counting aloud to such questions as, “How many trumpets would be on eight shelves? on 10 shelves? on 14 shelves?“
