Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 11.6

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional practice with the skills taught in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The “Find the Street” activity helps children practice their map-reading skills. Explain that the map is a picture of a few streets in a neighborhood. Say that the streets are in order and that the street at the top of the map is called First Street. Ask children to move their cursor to point to the words that say, “First Street.”

Explain that the name of the street that comes after First Street is not shown on the map. Instead, there is a picture of a tree on that street. Continue discussing the remainder of the map in this way. Then have children use their understanding of ordinal numbers to answer the questions, identifying street names that are absent from the map.
