Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 8.8

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides children with additional practice with the skills taught in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The “Pick the Flowers” activity provides children with practice in identifying patterns that follow four schemes: AB, ABC, AAB, and ABBC. In preparation for having the class do these activities, you may wish to review various patterns with the following kinds of pattern units:

Rhythm patterns - for example, clap, snap (AB) or snap, snap, clap (AAB)

Shape patterns - for example, use Pattern Blocks to show triangle, square (AB) or triangle, hexagon, hexagon (ABB)

Attribute patterns - for example, use buttons to show 2 holes, 2 holes, 4 holes (AAB) or use attribute blocks to show thin triangle, thick triangle, thick triangle, thin square (ABBC).

Color patterns - for example, use linking cubes of trains to show red, blue (AB) or yellow, green, green, orange (ABBC).
